Mindfulness in Motion by Dr Tamara Russell – a book review by Alex Clarke ★★★☆☆
Dr Tamara Russell MSc, PhD, DClinPsych is the founder of Body in Mind Training, which encapsulates her unique multiple perspective as a clinical psychologist, neuroscientist, martial artist and teacher of mindfulness.
Her Book Mindfulness in motion is remarkable. Not only in exploring the neuroscience of movement, but in explaining in scientific terms what the many pitfalls, challenges, and bodily experiences one may encounter taking their meditation on the move.
While reading I discovered my own strange bodily experiences while trying to get to grips with Tai Chi, were the result of something other than not letting go of the mind. They were because I had let go. Dr Tamara Russell explain such somatic releases in a way that many people like me (living with PTSD) will smile at – finally our bodies are being understood by someone in the field of movement meditation! She also explains WHY moving meditations such as Yoga and Tai Chi are the best ways to ‘rewire the brain.’ There are over 45 brain training exercises in the book!
The book might not be as friendly as some others out there but it doesn’t matter. This is a manual for mindful movement throughout your life! What Dr Tamara Russell has achieved here will change lives!
